Before Root Canal Treatment: Patient Instructions

Table of Contents

To help ensure a safe and successful root canal procedure, please review and follow the guidelines below, prior to your appointment:

1. Eat Normally Unless Instructed Otherwise

  • You may eat a regular meal before your appointment, unless you have been advised not to (e.g., due to sedation).
  • Please avoid alcohol and caffeine on the day of the procedure.

2. Take All Medications as Prescribed

  • If your dentist or physician has prescribed antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications, please take them exactly as directed.
  • Continue taking your regular medications (e.g., for blood pressure, diabetes), unless instructed otherwise.
  • Bring a list of all medications and supplements you are currently taking.
  • If you have been recommended to take antibiotic pre-medication prior to your root canal treatment, please inform our office when scheduling your initial appointment. Note: Pre-medication is typically not required for a consultation-ONLY visit.

3. Get a Good Night’s Sleep

  • Being well-rested helps your body manage stress and support healing after the treatment.

4. Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

  • Brush and floss your teeth before the appointment, especially around the area being treated. A clean mouth helps reduce the risk of infection.

5. Avoid Smoking or Tobacco Use

  • Refrain from using tobacco products for at least 24 hours before your appointment to promote better healing and reduce the risk of complications.

6. Arrange Transportation If Oral Sedation is Planned

  • Root canal procedures are typically performed under local anesthesia. In most cases, you may drive yourself and return to work or school afterwards.
  • If oral sedation has been arranged, you must have a responsible adult accompany you and drive you to and from your appointment.
  • If nitrous oxide ( laughing gas) is used to aid the procedure, transportation arrangements are not usually necessary.

7. Inform Us of Any Changes in Your Health

  • Please notify us if you develop a cold, flu, or experience any changes in your health before  your visit. Rescheduling may be necessary in some cases.

8. Ask Questions

  • If you have any questions or concerns about your treatment, please feel free to contact our office. We want you to feel comfortable and informed every step of the way.
